Westmere Restoration: The Glider – Part 1

Well, sometimes around the World Headquarters it seems like we are running a version of American Restoration (the original “good” version). Our latest project is a patio bench glider, the “as found” image is on the right.

The glider has wood slats on the seat and a metal tube frame. One of our resident experts, so to speak, believes the wood is probably locust, and I am inclined to agree. It is very hard and long-grained. Unfortunately, several slats have bad ends, and they will have to be replaced.

The metal tube frame is painted a dark green with hammered finish. It is very nice, but I suspect that there’s some rust under the paint. We will have to check that out. The good news is that the glider glides perfectly, so the mechanism is fine.

The top slat of the seat back has a carved feature that we will retain. I plan to enhance that somehow.

Somebody slathered white paint all over the thing, and it is a bit of a mess. Removing that will be part of the rehabilitation process.

Well, we will see what there is to see and report back as the project progresses. Stay tuned.
