By Jupiter at Vincennes University

What can I say? In the early 1980s we did By Jupiter at Vincennes University. There was a reason a for this, it is complicated. The show was a major hit on Broadway in 1942. Unfortunately, very few people are familiar with the show, which is really much too bad and sad. I did the scenery and lights, and came up with a couple of novel devices.

One machine that I developed, along with an excellent student who worked on the show, was a twine painting machine. The set required a tremendous amount to twine that had to be painted gold, so I invented a technique, and Dan Weil figured out how to do it.  In addition, we built a vine twisting machine and made many, many feet of vines.

I also designed and built a stag. The show features a character who is an Amazon huntress, and her primary entry has her carrying a stag. I used the basic specification for a particular species of deer, and we built a rather decent-looking stag. The construction methods were based on the principles used in custom auto body fabrication. I have subsequently discovered that some of the detail methods similar to those used by Ed “Big Daddy” Roth when he created his famous custom cars such as the Beatnik Bandit. So there!
