Anita and Maggie Inspect the Erie Canal on Lock 6
Lock 6 on the Erie Canal

The famous Erie Canal “starts” just north of Albany where the Mohawk River meets the Hudson. There is a segment of the canal from lock 2 through lock 6 called the “Flight of Locks”. The photo here is Lock 6.

The Flight is a series of locks that are close together, and within a relatively short distance, about a mile and a half,  the vertical distance travel on the canal changes.

There is a state park starting at about Lock 6 that extends up to the boat landing area  west of the water control gates. This park is primarily a boat launch area, but there are picnic tables on the north side of the canal. Just drive over the bridge at the control gate.

Our dogs like to explore here, with leashes on, of course, and in the photo we can see Maggie making sure one of the lock winches is fully operational.
