Morris the Dog

This is Morris the dog.

Morris was a very special canine pal. He grew up in the Germantown area of Philadelphia and went by the name of “PupPup”. Unfortunately, we had a tough time and was badly injured when he was hit by a car.

Morris hid under a porch and refused to come out. But, his guardian angel, Anita, came to his rescue. It was a traumatic experience, but Anita got him out and rushed him to the vet. The doc wasn’t sure if he would survive with all of his legs, but Anita said, “Do your best.”

Well, the veterinarian was a miracle worker and Morris survived with no lasting problems. Oh, I guess there was one small problem. He didn’t like to have his legs touched! Who can blame him?

Come to think of it, he didn’t like cars, either. He mostly overcame his distaste of automobiles when he visited Maine. Maine is a pretty good place, if you are a dog, and once Morris discovered that you could ride in a car to Maine he mostly changed his mind.

Morris was part of a “gang”. There was a park in his old neighborhood that had “issues”. The local parents and guardians wouldn’t take their children to the park because of the problems with, well, to be honest, drug dealers.  It was a bit of a mess. Then the dogs showed up. Twice a day a group of dogs would drag their owners to the park. The first wave came in about 7:00 am, then another wave appeared about 8:30 in the morning. The third and fourth waves started to show up around 3:30 pm. The dogs were all very friendly and ran round playing doggie games. Visitors would see the dogs dashing one way, then another. Oh, man, but those bad guys sure were allergic to dogs! They moved out of the park, then the children moved in. It was great!  Moms, dads, grandparents, nannies, and more came to the park. Within a year or so the city installed new playground equipment. And the kids liked the dogs, too. I think the dogs had a lot to do with the park’s turnaround.

Morris has many friends from coast to coast. He had a certain personality that was very contagious. Morris would flick his eyelids and give a wink, and the next thing we knew people wanted to take him home. He almost ended up in Los Angeles. I am happy to say that he stayed with us and eventually moved to Albany.

Morris has been gone for about 12 years, but we certainly haven’t forgotten him. He was a really good dog and a great pooch pal.
