Day Peckinpaugh at the Lock 6 Canal State Park
The Day Peckinpaugh

In our last post we featured the Day Peckinpaugh motorbarge that was at the Lock 6 State Canal Park near Cohoes, NY.  Built in 1921 for the purpose of hauling freight on the New York State Barge Canal. The Barge Canal was a sort of “upgrade” that replaced the Erie Canal just after the turn of the 20th Century. Of course, we call the Barge Canal the Erie Canal more often than not, so we probably confuse visitors to the Capital Region.

Anyway, if you are exploring the Cohoes area, either as a confused visitor or a non-confused local resident, keep an eye open for the Day Peckinpaugh. According to its Wikipedia page, the ship’s “home port” is the Peebles Island State Park.

For the full story of the Day Peckinpaugh’s rescue and restoration, go to the Canal Society of New York’s Web site here.
