Fly Away … Or Not

Fly Away … Or Not

I have been thinking about a project for some time now and this summer has turned out to be the perfect time to get it underway.

The photo on the right is that project about half-way completed. What you are seeing is a foam model of a toy airplane. With a little bit of luck you may recognize it as a Douglas DC-3. However, it is not meant to be a model representation of the actual airplane. It is, in fact, intended to be a representation of a toy version of the airplane.

This project will be a yard decoration for the holiday season. If all goes well it will have “North Pole Airlines” painted on it and will feature LED lighting. The structure is Styrofoam and it will be appropriately coated and protected against weather.

So far, so good. As you can see, it still requires a lot of shaping and assembly.

The construction techniques are based on those that we use in the theatre for building props and such. If you would like to see one of my stage projects, visit The Man Who Came to Dinner’s Mummy Case.
