Dog Tales: Annaleigh Acts Like A Greased Pig & Roger Learns A Lesson

Annaleigh wants to play
Annaleigh wants somebody to chase her because running is fun!

Let me say right away that I do not know why anybody would want to grease a pig. I do not see a future in it. I recently read that in the old days (whenever that was) people would have a contest where they would grease a pig and turn it loose. Then they would see who could catch the greased pig, and the winner could take it home.

I don’t know about you, but if I brought home a greasy pig there would be big trouble.

If you want to grease a pig, you can do it. Notice that I said “you can” because I am not going to grease a pig today, tomorrow, or any time in the future.

However, even though I do not intend to grease a pig, I can imagine how slippery one is. After I tell you this story, I bet you can imagine how slippery such a thing is, too.

Annaleigh, who has been the subject of other Dog Tales, loved to run. When she first came to live at our house, she would go nutty when she went outside to play. You see, she was a runner. Not a slow runner, either. She was a very fast runner. Probably the thing she liked to do the most was to run. Oh, and to herd sheep, which we learned about in the story here –

One thing that everyone must learn when they are young is that it is important to listen to what our parent, grandparents, and guardians have to teach us.  That is also why we go to school. The teachers have a lot to educate us about, and it is a good idea to learn as much as we can.

The problem is, as you may have guessed, is that we cannot learn everything all at once. It takes time to learn all the stuff we need to know. Sometimes people do things that are sort of dumb because they did not learn the important points before they did what they did.

Well, I suppose you could say that Annaleigh and I both had not learned all our lessons on the day that I took her for a ride. I had to go over to a shopping center to buy some supplies and I thought that maybe Annaleigh would like to go along. I was right, and when I opened the car do for her she hopped right in.

We drove over to the shopping center and I parked the car. I told Annaleigh to wait in the car for a few minutes and I would be right back. Then I unlatched my seatbelt and opened the door a little bit. That’s when things went terribly wrong.

I did not know that Annaleigh could be very slippery like those greased pigs I mentioned at the start of this story. Before I knew it, she had slipped out of the car door right behind me! With a big WOOSH she was off and running.

Oh, man, oh my, was I in a panic! Annaleigh ran across the parking lot and was flying like a rocket up and down the sidewalk in front of the stores. She ran all the way to the right, and then turned around and ran all the way to the left. Then she turned around and ran back to the right. Back and forth, up and down she ran.

I ran after her and tried to catch her, but Annaleigh thought it was a game. It wasn’t a game! I went one way and she went another. Every time I got close to grabbing her, she slipped through my hands. Talk about a greased pig! WOW!

I was getting desperate. I was afraid she would crash into somebody coming out of one of the stores, or, worse yet, crash into a car. Finally, after what seemed like forever, Annaleigh got a little tired. When she slowed down a nice lady captured her and held on until I could secure her with her leash.

It was a good thing there was a helpful person there that day. Otherwise Annaleigh and I might still be running back and forth at the shopping center.

In the end Annaleigh and I both learned a lesson.  Annaleigh learned that one should not go running off on their own.  And I learned that Annaleigh could to a great imitation of a greased pig!
