Old Car? Yes, What A Set of Wheels!

Here’s a kicker from the past. I though somebody out there might like it. This is my second car, a 1968 Opel Rallye Kadette.

I purchased this in the early ’70’s and drove it for a number of years. I made one cross-country trip in it, finally trading the car for a ’73 Subaru in Illinois.

This Opel was fairly sporty and had a lot of get-up-and-go. However, it was fairly typical German GM of the period and not really very good by today’s standards. In some ways it was the little things. For instance, it was recalled because the factory neglected to use hose clamps on the fuel line where it connected to the carb. That resulted in leaks and fires. A friend and I discovered this problem and I fixed it myself before the recall.

The car also has a problem where it would explode if it was rear ended. It was recalled for that, too. A bolt holding the tail light assembly could puncture the fuel tank, which was in the right rear fender, if it was bashed hard enough.

You don’t see too many of these on the roads now days. Well, let’s face it- you don’t see any of them on the road.
